Some pairings are simply meant for one another: an Italian suit with a silk tie, a little black dress with high heels, an oxford shirt with a pullover sweater. Just as true, home design features long term partners in traditional color pairings. Simply timeless, some color combinations will never go out of style. Yellow and blue, green and pink, purple and brown, red with black and white–you’ll often see these colors together for some very good reasons…
Often linked to iconic images, traditional color pairings create nostalgia that stays with them over the course of time. Yellow and blue? Chinoiserie, known as the storytelling artwork featured on ginger jars, from Chinese culture, is a great example. Soft green and pink? English gardens. Brown with purple carries the familiarity of the season of autumn. Red, black and white can make one think of the classic American diner.
The Evolution of Traditional Color Pairings
Both purple and brown have become more complex, influenced heavily by the gray movement. Many companies have infused these colors with gray undertones. Resulting in a “smoky” look for purple, it’s topping the charts. And brown? The ever-popular beige has been replaced with “greige” reaching the height of trend in 2017. Metallic sheens have also entered the traditional color pairings of browns and purples for unique design.
Red, black and white stay strong with the ability to evoke historic charm or contemporary flair.
More complex than ever, reds can lean toward orange, black softens to gray and white can warm up to cream-like shades. But that trio will never lose its power, with the originals still remaining quite popular. One reason these traditional color pairings stay together is their ability to allow one to shine, while the others stand back.
